COP27 Round table on “Food Security”

Happy to share the summary of the COP27 Round table on “Food Security”, published last night. It conveniently highlights the relevance of a quote from a previous post on animal efficiency, led by the Jersey cow:

"the Jersey [cow] needs 32% less water, requires 11% less land, produces less waste and uses substantially fewer fossil fuels with a 20% reduction in total carbon footprint. In terms of the amount of Jersey milk needed to produce 500,000 metric tons of cheese, the reduction in carbon footprint is equal to taking 443,900 cars off the road annually."

According to UN research, human-caused methane emissions could be reduced by as much as 45% within the decade, equating to averting nearly 0.3c of global warming by 2045. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from livestock, particularly methane from ruminants, is done by improving animal efficiency through genetics, better animal feed inputs, and reducing waste post-production so that more milk reaches the consumers who need it.

We are not yet able to move away from animal-derived nutrition. For now, the emphasis needs to be on investing in efficient water and forage use, maximising crop production for human consumption while optimising environmentally and socially conscious milk production and processing.
